My first trip to Montreal was in May 2025, and I was there for a conference that promised to be both informative and inspiring. The hotel that I was staying in was located in Old Montreal, which is also called Montréal, Vieux-Montréal, an area steeped in history and charm. It was a great location, surrounded by cobblestone streets and stunning architecture, making it easy to enjoy leisurely walks to the wonderful restaurants in the area. After speaking to friends and doing my research, I realized there would be many choices for me to dine at during my time in Montreal, ranging from cozy bistros to upscale eateries. I had a great mix of planned meals at acclaimed spots and others that were more spontaneous discoveries, where I could savor local delicacies and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere that characterized this incredible city. Each meal was not just about food, but also about the experience, creating lasting memories of my journey.
Maggie Oakes
I had time in my schedule, and after exploring the charming streets of Old Montreal, filled with vibrant history and culture, I settled on Maggie Oakes, a quaint eatery known for its delightful ambiance and delicious cuisine. It was truly a great choice and perfect for what I needed at that moment. I visited at the end of May, when the weather was still a little chilly for the season, but that did not deter my spirits. Eager to enjoy the fresh air, I opted to sit outside, where I could soak in the surroundings despite the cool breeze. Under the warmth of the patio heater, I savored my meal, each bite enhanced by the beautiful atmosphere and the gentle sounds of the bustling streets around me.

Café des Arts
I was walking through Bonsecours Market, which is located in Old Montreal, a historic area rich in culture and charm. The market buzzed with activity, with various restaurants and shops to explore, each offering unique local products and delicious cuisine. I had just eaten lunch at a nearby bistro, so I didn’t eat at Café des Arts, though the atmosphere was incredibly inviting. This café is a delightful combination of art and food, where local artists showcase their work while patrons enjoy their meals. The food looked yummy, beautifully presented, and I loved the overall vibe, with the aroma of freshly brewed coffee filling the air, making it a perfect spot to unwind and soak in the artful surroundings.
La Cave À Manger Boulangerie
As I walked out of Bonsecours Market, I noticed La Cave À Manger Boulangerie and was intrigued by its charming façade and inviting ambiance. There is seating outside at street level, with the food area down a set of stairs that adds a sense of discovery. I didn’t eat here either, but loved the atmosphere that enveloped the space, making it a perfect spot for casual gatherings. The establishment beautifully combines the elements of a cozy wine bar and a traditional boulangerie. The inside felt like a quaint French Boulangerie, where the decor evokes a sense of nostalgia and comfort. It was chilly and rainy when I visited, so no one was enjoying their outside seating, which only added to the cozy indoor vibe where patrons could escape the dreary weather. The bustling yet relaxed environment, filled with the soft clinking of glasses and laughter, will definitely keep La Cave À Manger Boulangerie on my list to visit for a future experience.
Hôtel Bonaparte
After visiting the breathtaking light show at Notre-Dame Basilica of Montreal, I found myself with some time to spare before dinner. Eager to unwind, I stopped into the charming Hôtel Bonaparte for a glass of wine. As I settled in, I couldn’t help but admire the menu; the food looked incredibly yummy, and those around me were relishing every bite of their meals. The staff, attentive and friendly, provided exceptional service, ensuring that every guest felt welcome and well taken care of. The dining room was beautifully decorated, creating a cozy yet elegant atmosphere that invited lingering conversations, while the lobby, equally stunning, exuded a sense of history and sophistication, making me feel like I was a part of something truly special.
Brasserie 701
Around the corner from my hotel was Brasserie 701, a charming restaurant. I had a delightful dinner there with friends, and it was truly yummy. I decided to order the cioppino, a rich and flavorful seafood stew that was bursting with fresh ingredients and spices. My friend opted for the gnocchi, which was light and fluffy, served with a delectable sauce that complemented it perfectly. The atmosphere of the brasserie added to the experience, with a warm ambiance and friendly staff who catered to our every need. We enjoyed not only great food but also the priceless company of good friends, creating memories that made our evening all the more special. The service was impeccable, adding to the overall enjoyment of our meal, making Brasserie 701 a place I would happily return to for another unforgettable dining experience.
Restaurant Helena
I was in Montreal to present an award at a conference I was attending and I decided to host a group dinner at Restaurant Helena, which came highly recommended by a former Vector Marketing colleague. The ambiance and the reputation of the restaurant were enough to entice our group, and with such an inviting name, I felt it was a must-visit! It turned out to be my favorite restaurant during my time in Montreal, from the warm hospitality to the exquisite menu. As a Portuguese restaurant, it was a delightful culinary experience, and every course was simply delicious, showcasing the rich flavors of Portuguese cuisine. I had the halibut, which was impeccably prepared, and they proudly bring their fish in fresh from Portugal, ensuring the highest quality. To finish the evening on a high note, our group savored a bottle of 2004 Taylor Fladgate Port, which complemented our meal perfectly and left us reminiscing about the delectable dishes we had enjoyed all night. The atmosphere buzzed with laughter and conversation, making it a night to remember.
Kyo Bar Japonais
Love sushi and wanted a quick lunch. It was yummy, fresh and fast, making it the perfect choice for my busy day. I would definitely recommend Kyo Bar Japonais if you find yourself in the Old Montreal area, as they offer a delightful selection of sushi that truly stands out. For me, I love simple sushi that highlights the fish, allowing the natural flavors to shine through without overwhelming sauces. Being gluten-free, I am unable to indulge in the rolls with tempura, which I understand can add a delightful crunch, but I appreciate the various other options available that are both delicious and healthier. The ambiance of the place adds to the overall experience, making it a memorable spot to enjoy a quick yet satisfying meal.
Porto Mar
My final dinner in Montreal was with colleagues at Porto Mar who were also attending the conference, making it a memorable occasion filled with camaraderie and shared experiences. It was great to reconnect with them after a long day of sessions and enjoy a wonderful meal together. This dinner marked my second delightful Portuguese meal of the week, a cuisine I had grown to appreciate for its bold flavors and fresh ingredients. We all enjoyed the food, stimulating conversation, and attentive service that made the evening even more special. The ambiance was perfect, as we had a beautiful table adorned with vibrant decor and lots of natural light streaming in, which complemented our joyous gathering and elevated our dining experience to a truly unforgettable level.
