Doylestown, PA during the holidays feels like a Hallmark movie. The streets are adorned with twinkling lights and beautifully decorated storefronts. There are many activities during the holidays including festive holiday markets filled with handcrafted gifts, cozy local shopping experiences that support small businesses, and lively events that bring the town together for joyous celebrations. It’s heartwarming to see families strolling through the streets, sipping hot cocoa as they share in the holiday spirit. Here are two of my favorite holiday activities: visiting the enchanting light displays in local parks and participating in the charming community events that showcase the unique character of Doylestown during this magical season.
Tree lighting
On Black Friday, Doylestown gathers to welcome Santa and light the beautifully adorned tree, creating a magical atmosphere that signifies the start of the holiday season. This delightful tree, generously donated by Bountiful Acres, becomes the centerpiece of the evening’s festivities, capturing the hearts of families and friends alike. The view from my apartment early in the evening shows a little bit of the crowd gathering, their joyful chatter and laughter mingling in the crisp air, which you can see grows in the photos below as more people arrive, eager to witness the enchanting moment when the lights illuminate the tree and Santa makes his grand entrance amidst the twinkling lights and cheerful melodies.

Prior to the lighting, my friends and the local band Hay Sugar took the stage to warm up the crowd on a notably cold night, filling the air with their infectious energy and soulful melodies. As the chilly breeze swept through the venue, their diverse setlist brought warmth to the hearts of the attendees, creating an inviting atmosphere where laughter and chatter mingled with the music. The glow from the stage lights flickered brightly, reflecting off the smiling faces of the audience as everyone gradually forgot the biting chill outside, captivated by the performance that promised a memorable evening ahead.

There is a vibrant parade that brings Santa into town, attracting families and children of all ages who eagerly await his arrival. Colorful floats adorned with festive decorations roll down the streets, while cheerful music fills the air, enhancing the holiday spirit. After Santa makes his grand entrance, the much-anticipated moment arrives when the town’s giant tree is lit, its dazzling lights sparkling like stars against the night sky. This year, I had the wonderful opportunity to watch the lighting ceremony from a neighbor’s apartment, giving me a unique perspective of the festivities as I enjoyed the warm glow of the lights and the excitement of the crowd gathered below.

Holidays at Fonthill Castle
Visiting Fonthill Castle during the holiday for their meander days is my favorite activity. Fonthill Castle, a magnificent architectural wonder, was the home of Henry Mercer, who was not only an archaeologist, anthropologist, ceramicist, scholar, and antiquarian but also a visionary who dedicated his life to preserving history and craftsmanship. This striking concrete castle, adorned with beautifully crafted tiles from various cultures, transforms into a winter wonderland during the holiday season, exquisitely decorated with themed Christmas trees that capture the spirit of the festivities. Each tree is uniquely designed, showcasing different colors and themes, creating a feast for the eyes and a perfect backdrop for cherished memories. This year, I had the pleasure of visiting with friends and a couple of their children, whose excitement added to the joyful atmosphere. One of the highlights of our visit was the playful tradition of finding the hidden pickle ornament nestled within the branches of each tree, a fun challenge that kept the kids entertained as they eagerly searched for that elusive surprise. The laughter and joy shared among us while exploring the castle’s rich history made this year’s visit even more memorable, filled with warmth and holiday cheer.

I love visiting right before sunset, so that we can get the golden hour with the trees and the outside. It’s the perfect time to capture stunning photographs or simply sit on a bench, soaking in the beauty of nature while enjoying the cool evening breeze. Every visit offers a unique experience, as no two sunsets are ever alike, leaving us with cherished memories of tranquility and enchantment.

There is so much to see and take in around Fonthill, with its rich history and captivating landscape drawing visitors from all over. I love how up close you can get with the treasures in the museum, allowing you to appreciate the intricate details and craftsmanship of each piece. The vibrant colors, unique textures, and fascinating stories behind the artifacts create a truly immersive experience that invites exploration and discovery. Each exhibit not only showcases the artistic talents of past cultures but also sparks curiosity about the lives of those who once held these remarkable items dear.
