For those who have been reading my blog, you know that my Dad loves waterfalls and seeks them out whenever we travel. My iPhone is now making videos for me, compiling all the waterfall footage that I have captured over the years. It has started to be something that I actively search for, as finding these natural wonders has become a lovely ritual for us. One of the things I have started to do is look for waterfalls on Google Maps for the area we are traveling to, not just casually noting their locations, but genuinely planning our routes around them. I take the time to read reviews, check photos, and get a sense of which waterfalls might have the best views. After identifying potential spots, I save the location to ensure we don’t miss any opportunities when we are in the area. When I am finally in that locale, I pull up my map to see what interesting sites surround me, particularly those enchanting waterfalls that promise stunning vistas and unforgettable experiences. I do this for more than just waterfalls; I find joy in discovering other hidden gems that deserve our attention. During our trip to Keuka Lake in October of 2025, we planned and visited some truly beautiful waterfalls along the way. Our adventure allowed us to see three great waterfalls: the iconic Niagara Falls, the serene Hector Falls, and the breathtaking sights at Letchworth State Park, each leaving us in awe of nature’s power and beauty.

Niagara Falls

Since we were an hour and a half from Niagara Falls, we decided to visit, knowing that this iconic destination was a highlight of the area. There was rain in the morning, casting a gloomy atmosphere, and since it was in the forecast for other days, we felt this might be our only chance to experience the falls during our trip. After our visit to Cutco Cutlery, where we enjoyed learning about their products and craftsmanship, we set out on a scenic drive filled with anticipation. The landscape was beautiful, and we were delighted to cross the border to view Niagara Falls from the Canadian side, renowned for its breathtaking views. Upon arriving, we found a perfect parking spot, which was a stroke of luck considering how busy the area can get. I quickly made my way to the edge of the falls, feeling the mist on my face and the excitement building as I aimed my camera to capture the stunning visuals. To my delight, there was a vibrant rainbow arcing across the spray of the falls, which made the moment even more magical and memorable. I loved seeing it, as it seemed to embody the beauty and raw power of nature right before me.

Hector Falls

After our delightful visit to Sampson State Park, we were driving back to our cozy VRBO when an unexpected sight caught our attention—a stunning waterfall cascading gracefully on the side of the road. Hector Falls, a hidden gem nestled along the banks of Seneca Lake, is conveniently located on Route 414 North of Watkins Glen. The sight was truly mesmerizing, with the water tumbling down the rocky cliffs. I love the vibrant fall foliage surrounding the falls, with hues of orange, red, and gold painting the landscape. The combination of the roaring water and the colorful leaves created a picturesque scene that felt like something straight out of a postcard, perfect for capturing a few memorable photographs.

Letchworth State Park

We had seen Letchworth State Park on Samantha Brown’s TV show, Places To Love. Since we were in the area, we eagerly added it to our list of must-visit destinations. The scenic road that wove through the park was nothing short of spectacular, flanked by tall trees and rugged cliffs that showcased nature’s artistry. With every turn, we were greeted by sweeping views of the Genesee River flowing elegantly below, along with the soft sounds of birds chirping overhead, making the journey a memory we would cherish forever.

There were great areas to pull off and view the Genesee River, allowing visitors to soak in the breathtaking scenery. The park has earned the nickname “Grand Canyon” of the East, and it’s easy to see where it gets its name, as the steep, dramatic gorges create stunning vistas that resemble the iconic canyon. The views, with their magnificent rock faces carved over eons, mixed with the lush greenery of the surrounding forests, offer a beautiful contrast that captivates the eye and invites exploration. As the sunlight filters through the trees, shimmering reflections dance on the river’s surface, enhancing the overall picturesque experience that this natural wonder provides.

The main reason we headed to Letchworth was to see the breathtaking waterfalls and the impressive bridge that spans across the gorge. The clouds added to the drama of the landscape, casting shadows that danced over the roaring water. There are exhilarating tours you can purchase to explore the park from a unique perspective via a hot air balloon, offering a stunning aerial view of nature’s splendor. I can see why that would be an unforgettable experience, floating peacefully above the trees and witnessing the beauty below. The waterfalls were not only beautiful but also mesmerizing, with the sound of cascading water filling the air; I loved seeing them up close.
