The top must see on my list for my trip to Montreal was to visit Notre-Dame Basilica of Montreal, and I have always loved visiting churches around the world for their unique architecture and serene atmosphere. Each place tells a story, and I find comfort and inspiration in the artistry and devotion that go into these sacred spaces. For those who have been following me for a while, it’s clear that Paris and France have captured my heart, a sentiment that deepened during my enchanting visit to Notre-Dame in Paris, where I had the unforgettable experience of attending mass on Christmas Eve. The warm glow of the candles and the soft murmurs of prayer created an ambiance I still remember vividly. I didn’t even realize it was a bucket list item until that magical night, when the cathedral’s beautiful lights and voices blended together in harmony, making me feel as though I had stepped into a dream. During my research for Montreal, I was thrilled to discover that there was a Notre-Dame Basilica there as well, igniting a wave of excitement within me to explore its beauty. The notion that I would get to experience another masterpiece of architecture, steeped in history and cultural significance, was exhilarating. Upon arrival, I noted that one of the bell towers was under renovation, which reminded me of the constant evolution of historical landmarks, showcasing the balance between preservation and modernization. The cornerstone of Notre-Dame Basilica of Montreal was laid at Place d’Armes on September 1, 1824, and it was dedicated on July 1, 1829, marking a significant moment in the city’s history and reflecting the dreams and aspirations of those who built it. I cherished my visit to the Basilica; however, I had to admit that as much as I adored the intricate stained glass and the soaring ceilings, it was the feeling of connectedness I experienced that truly left a mark on my soul, compelling me to return and explore more of what this vibrant city has to offer.

In front of the Basilica is the Maisonneuve Monument, a striking tribute that stands tall and proud against the vibrant backdrop of downtown Montreal. This impressive structure was erected in honor of Paul de Chomedey de Maisonneuve, the visionary founder of Montreal, who played a pivotal role in establishing the city in 1642. The monument not only serves as a reminder of his bravery and dedication but also encapsulates the rich history and cultural heritage of the area. Dedicated in 1895, it was unveiled during the 250th anniversary of Montreal’s founding, marking a significant milestone in the city’s evolution. Surrounding the monument, visitors are often captivated by the intricate sculptures and detailed artistry that reflect the artistic spirit of the time, making it a focal point for both tourists and locals alike.

When doing research for my visit, I saw that there was an enchanting light show in the evening, which immediately piqued my interest. There are actually two shows scheduled each evening, and after a brief conversation, the concierge at Le Montreal Westin recommended attending the 5:30 PM show specifically. They made this recommendation because it offered the best opportunity for dinner reservations afterward, allowing us to enjoy a meal without feeling rushed. However, it’s important to note that they don’t allow video or photos during the show itself, so the pictures you see were taken before the show began, capturing the anticipation in the air. As the lights began to dance and the music played, it became clear why this experience was so highly recommended. I do wholeheartedly recommend seeing the show, as it truly is a magical experience that adds a unique highlight to any visit.

After the light show, I walked around the Basilica and I loved it. The stunning architecture and intricate details of the building truly captivated me. They give you about a 1/2 hour to explore, but keep in mind it is crowded during this time, as many visitors are eager to experience the beauty of the surroundings. I found myself lost in the beauty of the stained glass windows and the majestic atmosphere, but I had to navigate carefully through the throngs of people all trying to capture their perfect photo. Despite the hustle and bustle, the ambiance added to the experience, making it feel alive and vibrant.

My light show ticket included the ability to visit during the day, which added an extra layer of excitement to my experience. The next day, I visited again and took more time to explore the intricate details of the venue. I love watching artisans at work, as their dedication and skill bring a unique charm to any setting. While I was visiting, I had the wonderful opportunity to witness some restorers diligently working on the stunning ceiling in one of the balconies, carefully bringing it back to its former glory. It was fascinating to see how they approached the restoration process, using techniques that have been passed down through generations. One of the YouTube channels I consistently watch is Chateau Diaries, and I loved immersing myself in the episodes dedicated to restoring the chapel at Château de la Lande. I could have watched them for hours, completely captivated by their craftsmanship and the meticulous care they put into each project. The passion they exhibited while restoring these historical treasures is truly inspiring, and it filled me with admiration for the art of restoration.

Located around the perimeter of the Basilica are alters dedicated to different saints, each reflecting the unique stories and contributions of these remarkable individuals to the faith. My confirmation name is Therese, and I have always felt a special connection to her; therefore, I always make it a point to seek out an alter dedicated to Saint Therese whenever I have the opportunity. During my last visit to the Basilica, I was overjoyed to discover that there was indeed an alter in her honor. I took a moment to reflect on her life and legacy, before lighting a candle, feeling the warmth of her spirit enveloping me, offering guidance and peace in my prayers.

The stained glass windows at the Basilica didn’t disappoint and were absolutely beautiful, casting vibrant colors that danced across the stone walls. As sunlight filtered through the intricate designs, I found myself captivated by the play of light and shadow, which brought the scenes to life in ways I had never experienced before. The details are breathtaking, each pane depicting biblical stories or saints, rich in symbolism and artistry. The stories they tell are amazing, weaving together history, faith, and craftsmanship, inviting visitors to pause and contemplate the deeper meanings behind each image.

Located behind the main alter is Chapelle Notre-Dame du Sacré Couer, which is where daily masses are held, drawing in both locals and tourists alike, creating a serene atmosphere filled with devotion. I attended mass, but unfortunately, because it was in French, I couldn’t understand anything that was being said. However, the beauty of the service and the melodic tones of the prayers still resonated deeply within me, and the chapel itself was remarkably different from the rest of the Basilica in its intimate size and warm lighting. The intricate details in the wood carvings and soft hues of the walls created an inviting space for reflection and peace. They don’t allow photos of the chapel, which adds an air of mystery and exclusivity, prompting visitors to fully immerse themselves in the moment rather than through a lens.

The organ in the Basilica has 7,000 pipes, each contributing to the grandeur of its intricate design, and one can hardly imagine the beautiful sound that is created by the talented organist as they skillfully navigate the keys, filling the vast space with harmonious melodies that resonate throughout the cathedral’s stunning architecture, captivating the hearts of all who are fortunate enough to hear the enchanting performances.

The details took my breath away during my visit, leaving me in awe of the craftsmanship and artistry that surrounded me. As I wandered through the intricate designs of the architecture, I noticed the delicate carvings and rich colors that seemed to tell a story of their own. Here are a couple of the remarkable features that stood out: the stunning stained glass windows that cast vibrant hues on the floor, and the elegant chandeliers that hung gracefully from the ceilings, illuminating the space with a warm glow. Each element combined to create an atmosphere that was not only beautiful but also deeply inspiring.
