Exploring the Douro Valley: Rabelo Boat Cruises

A visit to the Douro Valley isn’t complete without a cruise on a Rabelo boat. Before railroads, the Rabelo boat was used to transport port wine from the Douro Valley (where it is produced) to Porto (where it was exported). Wine Moments and Gourmet arranged for a river cruise on the Pessagueiro boat, and we left from Pinhão, a charming village surrounded by terraced vineyards. As we boarded, the soft sound of water lapping against the hull welcomed us aboard. We purchased a nice bottle of white wine from Quinta das Carvalhal to bring on the boat, eager to indulge in the local flavors while soaking in the magnificent scenery. We had perfect weather, with a gentle breeze and clear skies, and the views were outstanding as the sun glinted off the tranquil river. It was great to see the Quintas from the river, with their unique architecture and vibrant colors standing out against the lush green hills. Each turn of the river revealed even more breathtaking landscapes, reinforcing why the Douro Valley is considered one of the most beautiful wine regions in the world. It was just the two of us on the boat, which was awesome, allowing for an intimate experience as we toasted to the day’s adventure, listening to the gentle sounds of nature surrounding us.
